SANKOFA ARTIST RESIDENCY
Sankofa Artist Residency + The Art Exhibitions is a transformative program dedicated to supporting and empowering Black and Brown artists. Sankofa, a term that means "to look back in order to prepare for the future," embodies the essence of this residency. Designed to provide artists with the time and space to deeply engage with their practice, the program fosters an environment of learning and growth. using the growing community archive a source of inspiration.
Artists in the Sankofa Artist Residency are encouraged to explore the Community Archive and use their artistic practice to engage with and uplift the community. Through workshops, mentorship, and collaborative projects, artists learn how to harness their creativity to make meaningful connections and drive social change. This residency not only nurtures individual artistic development but also strengthens the bonds between artists and their communities, paving the way for a more vibrant and inclusive future.
Community Archive Activation
Artists in residency will be encouraged to explore and contribute to our community archive, a treasured space that preserves the stories and artifacts of Black and Brown family life in Milwaukee and beyond. This intimate archive serves as a cultural repository, and by donating their work, artists and community members can enrich the collective narrative and honor the lived experiences of these communities.
Intimate Art Exhibitions + Events
The house will host intimate art exhibitions, offering artists a unique platform to showcase their work and allowing the community to connect with both the art and artists. These exhibitions will foster a sense of community and mutual appreciation, supporting local creativity and strengthening community bonds through shared artistic experiences.
Artist Development
The Sankofa Artist Residency aims to cultivate a place of belonging for artists of color, providing a safe and welcoming environment where they can explore what it means to be an artist. Free from the dogma of typical galleries and art institutions, this residency encourages creative freedom, personal growth, and authentic expression, fostering a supportive community that values and uplifts diverse voices and experiences.
