This community art project preserves the stories of Black life in Milwaukee, uniting artists and community members to foster authentic engagement and build bridges of connection, compassion, and empathy.

Why does this Project Matter?

Community participation is crucial to the "Where Do I Belong?" project for several reasons. It ensures the authenticity and richness of stories, honoring and celebrating the diverse memories of Black life in Milwaukee. This project creates opportunities for people to engage with one another, fostering a sense of pride, solidarity, and building bridges of understanding, compassion, and empathy among participants and audiences. Designed as a restorative healing initiative, it allows individuals to share their stories in a supportive environment, promoting healing and emotional well-being.

 

The collaborative creative process between artists and community members results in innovative and meaningful publication that deeply resonate with the community. Active involvement helps preserve the cultural heritage and history of Black life in Milwaukee, ensuring these stories are passed down to future generations. Furthermore, community participation keeps the project relevant and impactful, addressing real issues and concerns, and making the outcomes more significant. This project and the community participation it involves enriches the storytelling process, fosters connection and healing, empowers individuals, and preserves the cultural heritage of Black families and communities across Milwaukee.
